Got my piwowarski discus

Have been dreaming about this German’s discus for months. Always wanted to drive there and bring some of his world-famous red turqs back.

Finally, thx to Francis, I got 9 of them. Very very nice. Currently under QT and looking good…

New Discus

Okay, finally went to David’s and got myself 4 check board pigeon blood and 1 pigeon blood snake skin plus one yellow white. They are much much smaller than what I had expected, definitely shorter than what David advertised. This batch has not been mixed with the old stock yet, so I am currently put them in a separate tank for QT.

Have sold quite a lot my old stock this week, the indian boy bought one female albino red turq and high body red melon, the possibly HK guy got the leopard snakeskin and spide-face ruby. I still need to get rid of the blue snake skin and the albino yellow crystal, as well as the two raffleisas.

And I think the blue tiger turq is about to run to the end of its life…

Discus Log (8)

Received the Fluke-solve (not cheap, 10gram for 10pound) last Friday and applied it (1gram for 240L) immediately to the 120L with a few discus that stopped feeding for a while. Pretty sure there is some kind of worms inside them which made them lose all the appetites. 1 hour later, four big chunk of white worms were observed at the bottom of the tank. Posted the picture on a forum and was told that is tapeworm. The main ingredient (50%) of Fluke-solve is praziquantile, very effective in killing tapeworms and its eggs, as well as flukes.

Also applied it in the 180L with 6 large discus as they were observed from time to time flickering their fins and scratching against the thermometers. Did not see any worms coming out in this tank though.

Use text book treatment (acriflavin + salt) in the other 120L for the LSS and the albino turq as they started to turn dark and folded their fins (also saw some little white fungi thing on the LSS’ body).

Put the spawning cone in the 60L breeding tank with the large blue Stenker pair.

Did 50% water change on Sat morning and make up for the lost Fluke-solve. Then left for warwickshire for three days. Came back on Monday evening

1. The blue stenker pair laid eggs but most of them were eaten and the rest grow fungi. The pair seems to be infected by the similar bacteria, not sure whether it is caused by the water quality (immature sponge filter) or other reasons. immediately took out the spawning cone and treated them with pure salt, hopefully they will recover soon (the good thing is that they are still interested in BH).
2. In 120L tank with a bunch of sick discus, white/brownish transparent poo were observed. I guess those discus are still recovering or the dosage of Fluke-solve is not strong enough. Will do another dose on this Sat (7 days later)
3. 180L tank, they are doing all fine. The SFR does seem to breathe slowly and the gills do not open as widely as before.
4. In 120L, LSS and albino turq are recovering, though LSS is still having darking body and the other one is folding the fins a bit. Will keep the concentration of acriflavin + salt for another day or two, then slowly dilute such solution.
6. The light unit of 400L broke, not entirely sure it is the bulb problem or the starter unit. Hopefully it is the former where I could just replace the bulb instead of taking apart of the starter unit that is sealed water-tight.

The stingy A X came by last Friday hoping to get a hugely-discounted price from me. In the end, he had to give up and left in disappointment. He is too Jian claiming driving from white chapel to my place “very far”.

Rang David yesterday and was told he would have a consignment of Pigeon bloods coming in June. They have always been my favourite strain (not-so-expensive and beuatiful color). Look forward to the day they are out of QT.

Moved those under medication into 120L tank with those are sick. Will treat them with FMG or Fluke-Solve later this week, after they have settled.

Moved the Stenker pair into the 60L breeding tank, hope they will spawn in a day or two. Will do large WC these couple days.

Replace the ARGD with a GSS to pair with the LSS. The ARGD does not look very fit due to no feeding in almost 3 wks. Finally found out the PH of the mix of RO and HMA is as high as 7.53, so did not expect that. Next time will use the same trick (discus buffer + neutralizer) to bring it down to about 6.8 for breeding purpose. And the MB seems to work.

The 6 large fishes still fight each other from time to time especially the LSS and SF. Don’t wanna do anything about it as long as they are still feeding.

Discus Log (6)

Lost all of the wrigglers. Pretty sure they were eaten by the parents. Not entirely clear about the reason, can be my strong curiosity checking them too frequently, or inexperienced parents…let’s see about that in the next round.

The Stenker blues finally proven to be a pair as I got wrigglers as well. However, the hatching rate was not very high plus the parents ate bunch of eggs already. So I am gonna just let the nature take its course and do nothing (leaving the external filter on and other fishes in the neighbouring partition).

The large blue turq is not doing so well, with its head tilting towards the tank bottom, although occasionally swimming horizontally. The other four fishes still refuse to feed at the moment. Will have to sort this out and dip them into metro solutions after the BD halfmoon and yellow crystall are out of the treatment of the acriflavin + salt.

The big spider face is breathing very heavily these days, not sure it is caused by stress (constantly fighting against the LSS) or gill problem (hopefully not). Noticed that its lower mouth (lip) is a bit sticking out, and couldn’t remember what it was like when I bought it. Hopefullly there is nothing serious about it. The other 5 big fishes in that tank are eating like pigs.

Yeah! Another successful batch of wrigglers.

Hopefully can grow them big.

Nothing else happening except the pair of Stenker blue spawned as expected.

Discus Log (4)

Firs thing I noticed today when I got back is the big spider face was bullied by the even bigger spotted leopard. As the spider face is worth at least twice as much as the leopard, I decided to move fishes around, again.

Figured it would be beneficial to put fishes of similar size into one tank so that the bully will be distributed. So took out the small albino leopard, medium blue ss, small rafflesia, small golder ss, and put them into the 400L with the big leopard and the marlboro red. And replaced them with the big spider face and the male checkboard turq. To my surprise, the LSS started to attack the spider face the moment it touches the water. Watched for a while, and the situation was kinda out of control. Other fishes started trying to take it down. Okay…partition the tank in the end, 3 on the left and 3 on the right. You know what, bulliee becomes the bullier, the spider face began to attack the other two fishes in the same partition of the tank….Sigh, I don’t care about the fighting as long as they won’t get too stressed. Today is also the second final dose of the Sterazin to treat the ulcer and fluke.

Similar thing happened in the 120L tank where the stenker blue pair started to court each other. They guard one corner of the tank and drove the rest of the fishes all the way to the other end. Had to partition this tank and put the breeding cone inside for the pair. Now they are cleaning the cone restless. The spawning will begin in hours, I am sure.

The pair of ARGD and LSS are still fanning the eggs, most of which look fertilized and should hatch by the end of tmr if nothing goes wrong. Fingers X’ed.

The stupid A X rang me again regarding the potential purchase of a male and female discus from me. Last time I let him go too easily. This time will try to rip him off to compensate the loss of the red melon!

Red Melon

COD: Roasted by the heater during treatment (will die of parasite infection sooner or later)

Discus Log (3)

Yes, as I expected, the red melon didn’t make it. It was again the heater that killed the fish. The difference this time is that the fish stuck inside the plastic mesh guard I made to protect the stupid fish from touching the heater, unbelievable! Anyway, cheap fish, not worth moaning about. But I have got to find out the main reason it stopped feeding and breathe so heavily, and how I should treat it or will it ever be able to cure. The gill plate looks funny.

The pair are still fanning the eggs with their fins, which look fine to me (only couple went white, a sign of un-fertilised). Hopefully tmr they will all hatch.

The Stenker blue pair finally started to feed after a month, during which they spawned twice and experienced very serious X-contamination. Now they are courting each other, cleaning the spawning site (though I am too lazy to place a spawning cone inside, guess they will either lay eggs on the bottom or the side glass of the tank). It is gonna happen within a day or two, I reckon.

Found some fungi growing on the big rafflesia, can be a sign of stress or bad water quality. Moved it into 60L QT tank with the big halfmoon BD and albino yellow crystal for acriflavin + salt treatment.

The big spider face, the male checkboard turq and female blue SS are in a tri-angle relationship, constantly fighting and courting one another. Once I can identify the sex of the spider face, will find it a good partner for breeding purpose.

Every other fish is doing fine.
